In 2022, the PACEdays user conference was held at the Courtyard by Marriott Berlin City Center on 10-11 May 2022.
PACEdays 2022 featured insightful content from industry insiders as well as detailed product updates from PACE experts. Additionally, the PACEdays format was broadened to facilitate more individual networking opportunities, including a HUB stage where guests were able to enjoy exciting presentations from PACE and our partners in a trade-show style format.
Keeping with our tradition of more than 20 years of PACEdays, we hosted a networking dinner on the night of the first day. In 2022, we returned to the Pan Am Lounge in Berlin—a true blast from the past and an entertaining monument to aviation history!
Below, you'll find a link to the PACEdays 2022 agenda, the download form for PACE presentations, and the list of guest speakers and their presentation abstracts.
David Debney, Chief Engineer - Aerospace Technology Institute
The FlyZero project was led by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and aimed to determine whether zero-carbon emission flight is feasible for large commercial aircraft. It was a 12-month project which brought together 100 engineers drawn from across the UK aerospace community. FlyZero has concluded that zero-carbon emission flight can be realized through the use of green liquid hydrogen. Huge challenges will need to be overcome, but ambitious technology research programs can make this vision of the future a reality.
Naomi Allen, Senior Technologist - Aerospace Technology Institute
The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) released a new technology strategy in April 2022. The strategy focuses on UK aerospace achieving its Net Zero 2050 target and describes roadmaps for the path forward to achieve this. A key message from the strategy is that net zero is only achievable with investment into both zero-carbon and ultra-efficient aircraft using sustainable aviation fuels. The ATI and FlyZero teams have created conceptual aircraft designs representing both future ultra-efficient SAF-using aircraft and zero-carbon emissions aircraft. These APD models allow us to evaluate the benefits of different technologies and understand the potential impact on global emissions.
Mark Galyen, Senior Manager - American Airlines
with Matthew Blake, Vice President of Solutions - Nexteon
and Frank Opel - PACE
Akram Amir, Founder and CEO - AR Engineering
AR Engineering will be showcasing their extended reality use cases that have been implemented within the MENA Region, while also covering the impact of XR on stakeholders, such as supporting the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies.
The Boeing Company
Alex Van Schoonhoven, Customer Engineer
& Twila Wilkin, System Engineer - Boeing
Boeing will be providing an overview of its digital transformation and how the Pacelab ACE software suite of tools fits into our long-term vision for a digitally connected enterprise.
Arjen Piest, Product Manager - DTN
This presentation will go deep into the Enhanced Flight Hazards suite from DTN. The suite has proprietary, best-in-market, EDR turbulence algorithms. We will demonstrate how that can be used in flight planning, in dispatching and in the cockpit. We will also discuss future developments and enhancements where DTN envisions utilization of the “online cockpit” and combining forecasts with observations.
Nadiia Cherniavska, Business Analyst - ELEKS
with Carsten May & Team- PACE
Valerie Chu, Director Major Programs - Inmarsat
Inmarsat’s ground-breaking Iris air traffic management program with the European Space Agency (ESA) is a key component of modernizing and digitalizing the aviation industry. Iris supports the Single European Skies masterplan and creates benefits to airlines and ANSPs, such as minimizing flight delays, saving fuel and reducing the environmental impact of air travel.
Aleksandar Joksimovic, Research Engineer - ISAE-SUPAERO
This talk will present recent and ongoing developments at ISAE-SUPAERO to leverage Pacelab APD™ and PROOSIS™ to create a whole aircraft sizing and integrated performance simulation tool providing a fully transparent propulsive system model. The context and need for such work will be given, accompanied by an overview of analogous initiatives by the community. It will followed by elaboration of the infrastructure developed to enable the coupling. Finally, a provisional case study of a full short-to-medium range airplane sizing study with a full engine model will be presented, along with an overview of ongoing developments to enable comprehensive multidisciplinary design space exploration capabilities.
Chris Shields, Head of Flight Mechanics - Lilium
Lilium is creating a sustainable and accessible mode of high-speed, regional transportation for people and goods. Using the Lilium Jet, an all-electric vertical take-off and landing jet, offering leading capacity, low noise and high performance with zero operating emissions, Lilium is accelerating the decarbonization of air travel. Chris Shields, Head of Flight Mechanics at Lilium, will give an overview of the technology behind the Lilium Jet, the business model, and the path to certification with a focus on aircraft performance.
Wolfram Greiner, Product Owner - Lufthansa Group
Pacelab FPO Classic has been part of Lufthansa’s EFB suite for years and has contributed to both fuel savings and increased awareness for our pilots. The offline use has been an advantage of this app, but the technical barriers for implementation are high if you start from scratch. Pacelab FPO Cloud has lowered these barriers a lot and its cloud architecture provides the basis for future optimization potential. This presentation describes advantages, potentials, drawbacks, and challenges encountered during this migration from an airline's perspective.
Klaus Sonnenleiter, CEO - Luftronix
This presentation will demonstrate how to drastically reduce the time and cost of unscheduled inspections in line maintenance. Luftronix inspection stations will automate the inspection process with the help of high-precision drones that work indoors and outdoors. High-resolution images paired with guaranteed precision measurements allow fully automated scans without the need to provide access for human inspectors.
Matthew Blake, Vice President of Solutions - Nexteon
with Mark Galyen, Senior Manager - American Airlines
and Frank Opel - PACE
Christopher Jouannet, Principal Engineer, Aircraft Conceptual Design
& Kristian Amadori, Senior Engineer of Advanced Design - Saab Aeronautics
The goal of this work was to test the capabilities and find the boundaries of Pacelab APD/SysArc recently introduced at the Saab. To this end, a typical technology assessment study was crafted as an application case, in which the impact on mission and vehicle performance metrics is assessed when different on-board system architectures and technology clusters are applied.
Wolf Sonnenberg, Director of Connectivity Solutions - Teledyne
This presentation illustrates how key aircraft data provided to Pacelab FPO in flight using IP-link-based data streaming can enhance the effectiveness of flight profile optimization.
Roman Uzun, Aerospace Engineer and TU Berlin Graduate
In addition to conventional batteries, structural batteries have gained attention in recent years for use in hybrid-electric aviation. Different conventional and structural battery technologies have different advantages and disadvantages, especially in terms of their volumetric and gravimetric power density. In this presentation, the suitability of different battery technologies for use in the D328 regional aircraft will be investigated. For this purpose, the models implemented in Pacelab APD for the simulation of conventional batteries will be supplemented by analyses for the representation of structural batteries. With this extension, characteristic OAD parameters of hybrid-electric aircraft with conventional and structural batteries can be compared and evaluated.
Jack Strongitharm, Solution Engineer - Unity Technologies
The metaverse is not a singular place, and it is not limited to VR headsets. It is many places, being experienced on all kinds of devices. From high-fidelity experiences on game consoles to mobile AR – Unity runs on the largest number of devices to support an anytime, anywhere metaverse. With its real-time-3D-first approach, the brand is empowered to drive its metaverse strategy rather than follow.
Markus Heinone, Account Executive - Varjo
